The defendant had previously pled guilty without a sentencing agreement with the State to the class C felony of delivery of a controlled substance, the class E felony of unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child, for an incident that occurred on November 8, 2017.

In the evening hours of November 8th, officers responded to a call of occupants smoking marijuana in their car at a Burger King in Christian County, Missouri.  The officers approached the vehicle with multiple occupants, including two young children inside, and smelled the odor of marijuana.  Officers searched the vehicle and found inside multiple guns and drugs.

The defendant, KANE TANSKI, was the driver of the vehicle.  In relation to TANSKI, officers found a loaded 9mm Glock 17 handgun on the driver’s side floor board and a backpack in-between TANSKI’S legs.  Inside the backpack, officers located a clear plastic bag containing a large brick-shaped white powdery substance, which the Missouri State Highway Patrol confirmed as a quarter-pound of cocaine, and a large 9mm drum magazine containing 49 bullets.

The State requested the maximum and consecutive sentences on all counts.  Defense counsel argued for concurrent time.  The Court sentenced the defendant to ten (10) years on the delivery charge, four (4) years on the weapons charge, and one (1) year each on the endangering charges.  The Court ran the delivery and weapons charge consecutively for a total of fourteen (14) years.

The range of punishment for a class C felony is a term of incarceration of 3-10 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections.  The range of punishment for a E felony is a term of incarceration up to 4 years and/or a fine up to $10,000.  The range of punishment for an A misdemeanor is a term of incarceration up to 1 year in the county jail and/or a fine up to $2,000.

On June 8, 2019, Senior Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Shana Mora participated in the “Over the Edge” fundraiser for the Child Advocacy Center after raising $1100 for the organization.

Over the Edge is a unique fundraising program that tasks participants with raising a minimum of $1,000 dollars for the Child Advocacy Center. Participants meeting this criterion have the option of rappelling down the 11 story Sky Eleven (formerly Woodruff) Building in downtown Springfield, Missouri.

The Child Advocacy Center is an invaluable partner in both our community and the work we do at the Christian County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. Formed in 1995, the CAC serves 16 counties throughout southwest and south central Missouri and has offices in Springfield and West Plains.

The CAC works with Children’s Division and other law enforcement agencies to ensure a “child-first” approach to handling cases of suspected child abuse. This ensures that investigations put the needs of child victims and witnesses first, and reduces the risk of further trauma during the investigation process.
