OZARK, MO—The Christian County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office announces that on July 12, 2023, Cole Thomas Smith was sentenced to 15 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections on one count of unlawful use of a weapon for a drive by shooting that occurred on January 27, 2022. On May 4th, 2023, Smith pled guilty to the charge, admitting that he had fired multiple rounds into a residence in Nixa, Missouri. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the incident. The Missouri statute under which Smith was charged mandates the maximum sentence for a class B felony (15 years) be imposed, although it allows the court the option of giving either probation or prison time. The Honorable Judge Laura Johnson presided over the sentencing hearing.
The case was prosecuted by Christian County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Tarek Masri. Julie Harlan served as the victim advocate. The Christian County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case.
